Boxing is acknowledged as being the sport that requires the maximum level of fitness from its participants.
The perfect boxer has never been created, but when they are they will have the pace of a sprinter, the stamina of a middle-distance runner, the strength of a weightlifter, the balance of a tightrope walker, the accuracy of an archer, the hand to eye coordination of a tennis player, the skin of a rhino and the analytical mind of a chess Grand Master.
That list illustrates the type and number of skills that are needed to succeed in the sport and explains why World champions – often with several successful defences of their title already accumulated – are often heard saying how they want to improve their performance in the next contest.
Since the first rules for the ‘Noble Art’ were drawn up by the Marquis of Queensbury, boxing has evolved even further in both of its codes – professional and amateur.
Professional boxing is controlled by the British Boxing Board of Control, which sanctions all contests staged in Great Britain. They set the standards needed for anyone wanting to become a professional boxer and also apply strict rules on those who officiate and supervise approved bouts.

The unpaid ranks are controlled by the Amateur Boxing Association of England – separate bodies control the sport in Wales, Ireland and Scotland and all are affiliated to both EABA and IABA – the respective European and International umbrella organisations.

The more involved you become with the sport, the greater the appreciation you will learn of its demands.
Boxing excites and can become highly addictive, so prepare yourself for a long association with the sport.
